Credit By Exam

Overview

Arlington ISD’s credit-by-exam (CBE) program, in accordance with state and district guidelines, allows students enrolled in an AISD school the opportunity to gain credit for a variety of courses.

Earning Credit

Students may earn credit by exam for subjects in which they have had no prior instruction if the student:

  • Scores a three or higher on a College Board advanced placement examination that has been approved by the school district board of trustees for the applicable course,
  • Earns a scaled score of 50 or higher on an examination administered through the College-Level Examination Program and approved by the school district board of trustees for the applicable course, OR
  • Scores an 80% or higher on a district-approved, criterion-referenced test.

Students may earn credit by exam for subjects in which they have had prior instruction if the student:

  • Scores a 70% or higher on a district-approved, criterion-referenced test.

Transcript Records for a Credit-by-Exam

If the student earns credit by exam for a course, the school must record the student’s CBE score on the student’s transcript.   However, the score is not calculated in the student’s overall grade point average.

General Information

District-approved CBEs are free of charge to students enrolled in Arlington ISD.  In accordance with state guidelines, an alternative exam from Texas Tech University or The University of Texas at Austin may be purchased by the parent/guardian and administered by the district.  A student may not attempt to earn credit by examination for a specific high school course more than two times.  CBEs should be scheduled in consultation with school staff and in accordance with the district testing calendar.  The exams are not timed.
