Pre-AP and Regular Geometry and Astronomy

Class Information

Pre-AP and Regular Geometry

Geometry is an introduction to logic and critical thinking, as well as a foundational course in mathematics. In this course, we will build on the concepts learned in Algebra I and apply them to two- and three-dimensional figures. As part of this, we will also learn some of the basic concepts of logical analysis and how to apply them.

Pre-AP Geometry

This is a "flipped" class -- students are responsible for taking their notes at home, and we work on practice and application problems during our class time.

Regular Geometry

In this class, we will combine short notes with lots of practice.  This class does not have homework assigned as a general rule.

Astronomy is an upper-level science course, designed to study what we know or can theorize about the history and composition of our universe, and how we know these things, whether through investigation here on Earth or in space.  This is a project-based course in which most of the work will be done in class.

I am available to answer any questions that a parent should have, either by email (smiller5@aisd.net) or by phone through the school receptionist at 682-867-8300. If a parent wishes to meet with me, please contact the counseling office to set up an appointment. My conference period is from 9:15 to 10:45 on B days.

Class Rules (all classes)

  1. Be nice.
  2. Work hard.
  3. No personal grooming in class (I will confiscate).

Homework and Quiz Policy

In Pre-AP Geometry (my only classes that have homework assigned), students will receive a 50 for completed notes in Focused Note-taking (Cornell Notes) style. At the next class, if they show me that they have highlighted their notes and created questions, then their grade is raised to a 75. Once they have written the summary, they receive the full 100 for the notes.

Advance notice will be given for quizzes and tests. This means that even if a student is absent the day before the quiz or test, he is still expected to be ready for it when he returns. Quiz objectives may be retaken until the student is successful or the end of the six weeks.

Progress reports will be sent to all students at the beginning of the fourth week of each six weeks. In addition, a student’s grades are available to his parent or guardian through TEAMS. To register for this program, please contact the counselors’ office.

The best way to be successful in my class is to attend regularly, complete homework assignments consistently, and participate in class. Students are responsible for their grades, but I will do all in my power to give them the tools they need to be successful.

PAP Geometry Supply List
The following items should be brought every time:

  • Pencil (I recommend using a mechanical pencil)
  • Spiral notebook or composition book
  • Ring binder

These are not necessary, but could come in handy:

  • Ruler or protractor
  • Pencil sharpener or extra pencil leads
  • Eraser
  • Colored pencils
  • Scissors

Make-up Work

If a student is absent from class, it is the student's responsibility to turn in any work missed and make arrangements for any tests or quizzes missed. The student will have as many days as he was absent to make up the work.
