Advancedment Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in and complete a degree at a four-year institution. The goal is to raise the rigor and expectations of students. Because of this, AVID is an advanced academics support system.
A sample of five days in Lamar AVID includes 45 minutes of tutorials and 45 minutes of curriculum Monday through Thursday. Friday is activity day which is called Viking Lab. The AVID curriculum includes a writing curriculum, college and career information, and strategies for success. Tutorials include collaborative study groups, writing groups, and Socratic seminars. Cornell notes taking is required in all facets of the program and other class that the student is enrolled.
All class materials can be found on http://www.Edmodo.com, in your student's AVID group.
