Child Development is comprised of two semesters, and addresses the knowledge and skills related to child growth and development from prenatal through school-age children, equipping students with child development skills. Students will use these skills to promote the well-being and healthy development of children, and investigate careers related to the care and education of children.The first semester is devoted primarily to:

1 A) parenting skills and responsibilities, including child support and other legal rights that come with parenthood;

   B) relationship skills;

   C) prevention of family violence;

   D) first aid and CPR skills;

   E) assessing the safety of purchases for children;

2 A) components of optimal prenatal care and development including signs and stages of pregnancy;

   B) environmental & hereditary factors affecting fetal development;

   C) nutritional needs during pregnancy;

   D) analyze reasons for medical care and good health practices prior to and during pregnancy;

   E) advances on prenatal care and development;

   F) the process of labor and delivery;

3 F) research the advantages of breastfeeding

During the second semester, students will:

3 A) Investigate strategies for optimizing the development of infants, and explaining their physical, social, emotional,  and intellectual needs, including those with special needs

   B) generate ideas and gather information relevant to care and protection of infants

   C) the impact of the infant on the family (finances, responsibilities, relationships)

   D) growth and development of infants such as brain development and mental health

   E) nutritional needs of infants

   F) careers involving infants

4 A) Investigate strategies for optimizing the development of toddlers; analyze their physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs, including those with special needs

   B) create play activities for toddler's growth

   C) identify patterns of typical growth and development of toddlers

   D) identify community resources relevant to the care and protection of toddlers

   E) prepare snacks or meals that meet nutritional guidelines for toddlers

Students will also analyze the growth and development of preschool and school-age children, identifying the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of each. They will learn to describe the role of play in their growth and development, develop activities for physical exercise, reading communication, listening skills, and self-reliance, etc. Students will work to identify appropriate licensing regulations for child care, and prepare snacks to support nutritional needs of children. They will analyze the role of the school environment, how individual and group identities are established  and change over time, investigate care and protection of children including child care, abuse, guidance, immunizations, and appropriate health care. Students will also explore both short- and long-term goals in child development, and discuss legislation and public policies affecting children.

Homework is not usually assigned, however, in the event that a student is unable to complete an assignment in class, it may become homework, which will be due the next scheduled class date.

Grading consists of classroom participation and assignments which will count as one grade, and quizzes/test which will count as two grades. Occassionally, a project may count as 3 grades, howeve,r students will be aware in advance if this is the case.
