Medical Terminology

This course is basic to all students interested in careers in the health care industry. It is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, and singular and plural forms, plus medical abbreviations and acronyms. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology.

Grade Placement: 11 - 12

Concepts of Health Care

This course is designed for the student who is interested in health-related careers. It provides students with a knowledge of a variety of concepts including terminology, medical and legal ethics, human anatomy and physiology, CPR and First Aid. Students will explore health care as an industry and integral part of the economy. A full year of this course will satisfy the AISD Health graduation requirement.

Grade Placement: 10 - 12
Prerequisites: Algebra I and Biology

This course is worth 1 credit.

Health care Work Experience

Area health care facilities provide unique training for students wishing to explore a specific health care career. Related classroom instruction enhances the experience while giving the student a broader view of health care in general. This experience may be paid or unpaid. This course will satisfy the AISD graduation requirement for the third semester of
P.E. credit. Students will have the opportunity to earn the industry-standard Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Certification.

Grade Placement: 11 - 12
Prerequisites: 16 years of age, Application, Concepts of Health Care strongly recommended
