Grading Policies

1. Classwork (& homework) grades (40%) written assignments, audience etiquette, focus activities, daily performance grade, deadlines met, etc.

2. Test grades (60%) which would include not only traditional written test but any memorization of a script and any performance that was allotted rehearsal time i.e. monologues, duet scenes etc.

3. Play Analysis/Production Evaluation(weighted as 2 test grades.)

Every 6 weeks all theatre students will either read and analyze a full length play script or attend and evaluate the LHS play that is currently in production. There is a nominal fee to attend performances.  

*If a student cannot afford this fee, and this is the option the student chooses, we will work with the student to insure they will see the production without monetary cost.  We only ask that the student communicate the need.* 

This play analysis/production evaluation is a significant part of a six weeks grade.

Almost every assignment may be turned in late for partial credit.  Almost all tests may be retaken if students wish to improve their grade.  All graded Play Analyses and Production Evaluations may be returned with corrections for an improved grade.    I believe in giving students many opportunities to do their best and encourage them to retest, submit corrections, and turn in past due missing assignments. 

Tutoring

I am happy to meet with any student in need of tutoring.  Students that wish to meet outside of class for extra help must see me to arrange a time for tutoring.  As a theater teacher I am often committed to conducting rehearsals after school, but am available most days during upper class lunch and will make time to meet with any student who reaches out for help.

Course Descriptions

Theatre Arts 1, 2 & 3 all develop the following essential knowledge and skills:

     1. Perception of self and others.

     2. Creative expression in acting, writing, and theater production.

     3. Healthy, effective, and expressive use of voice and body

     4. Analysis of dramatic literature and awareness of historical/cultural heritage.

     5. Appreciation and evaluation of theatrical productions and concepts.

Theater Arts I offers a general overview of the world of theatre, focusing upon your personal development as an actor and as a theatre enthusiast.  You will be given opportunities to stretch your imagination, focus your creative energies, and work alone and in groups to bring the world of theatre to life.

Here’s some of what Theater Arts I students will do in my class:

Memorize and perform short monologues and scenes

Learn to appreciate and evaluate plays seen or read

Learn about stage movement (blocking) and parts of the stage

Learn about dramatic plot structure

Develop vocal clarity, physical control, and self-confidence

Express themselves in comedic and dramatic performances

Learn general knowledge of technical theatre

Watch professional stage productions on video

Learn ways to analyze and develop a character

Take written quizzes and tests to show what they’ve learned

Work in their seat and on their feet

Perform in a one act play at the end of the year

Theater Arts II reinforces and builds upon all that was learned in Theater Arts 1 primarily though improvisation and the rehearsing and producing of one-act plays.  Through exercises, theater games, warm-ups, rehearsal, and performance students will further explore the expressive use of voice and body, text analysis, and character development.  A greater understanding of theater production also will be gained through technical work on the one-act plays.   

Here’s some of what Theater Arts II students will do in my class:

Explore acting through theater games and exercises

Evaluate plays seen or read

Review and reinforce concepts learned in Theater I

Collaborate with classmates in writing short plays

Learn and practice physical & vocaal warn-ups Reflect upon their work and growth as a theater artist

Audition for, rehearse, & perform one-act plays

Provide one-act plays  with necessary technical support

Theater Arts III reinforces and builds upon all that was learned in Theater Arts 1 & 2 while exploring the specific demands of acting on-camera.  On-camera acting technique will be learned through evaluating and analyzing the playback of recorded in-class exercises as well as through acting in the filmed work of students in Lamar’s IB Film and Video Production class.  Students in this class, along with students from Lamar’s audio visual department, will work together as an in-house production unit producing videos used by the school’s faculty and staff to help teach various initiatives to the larger student body.

Explore acting through theater games and exercises

Evaluate plays seen or read

Review and reinforce concepts learned in Theater I & II

Learn about the history of film and movie making

Reflect upon their work and growth as an actor Study film/video acting and industry terminology

Audition for, rehearse, & perform in short films

Practice “theatrical” & commercial audition techniques

Watch playback and evaluate recorded performances Explore business aspects of an on-camera acting career
