Viking families and our North Arlington community,

I want to update you on our efforts to alleviate concerns recently expressed about Lamar students’ behavior at lunchtime in the area around our school. We are working in conjunction with the Arlington Police Department regarding active monitoring of the area between Lamar High School and Kroger, and we have been in contact with Walgreens, Kroger and other nearby businesses to better understand how we can address their needs with our students. We are committed to monitoring and addressing student behavior on our campus and in the areas adjacent to Lamar High School.

In the days following spring break (3/13-3/17), we will redouble our efforts at preventing freshmen and sophomore students from walking down Lamar Boulevard during our lunch periods. As you know, junior and senior students are allowed to leave campus during lunch, but I anticipate a sizeable decrease in the volume of students walking to local businesses. This action will also lessen the litter along Lamar Boulevard.

In addition, we will dedicate class time to discussion and reflection on the importance of community, both within and outside of school, and the symbiotic relationship each of us has with our community. We will take a more active role in helping our students grasp that we are a part of something bigger than ourselves, and when we are conscientious in addressing the needs of the community, we enrich ourselves simultaneously.

We will not achieve perfection in striving to be better neighbors to the North Arlington community, as we are flesh and bone, but we will improve. I am grateful for the connection so many of us have to Lamar High School, and we will always work to be a source of pride for North Arlington. As we say at Lamar “Viking Fight Never Dies” which includes the desire to be better tomorrow than we are today. Thank you for your support of Lamar High School.
